Beatification of Cardinal Newman

Church officials in England have confirmed that the beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman will take place in Birmingham rather than, as originally planned, at Coventry airport. Pope Benedict XVI will preside at the beatification ceremony, which will be held on September 19, the final day of the Pope’s trip the England. Organizers expect 80,000 people to attend the service in Birmingham’s Cofton Park. Earlier plans for the papal visit envisioned a beatification ceremony taking place with an outdoor Mass at the airport in Coventry. But with planning for the papal trip dogged by organizational and budgetary problems, the ceremony was shifted to a less ambitious venue. The Mass at Coventry airport would have called for considerable advance planning, including road closings and intense security measures. Organizers of the papal trip pointed out that with the beatification taking place in Birmingham, Pope Benedict would have the opportunity to visit the Oratory where Cardinal Newman worked.

Two members of the New York Congregation Oratory will take part in the celebrations: Fr. Martin Kertys and Fr. Francis Conka.

On June 28, 2007, the Feast of the Holy Apostle Peter and Paul, Pope Benedict XVI founded the New York Congregation Oratory of St. Philip Neri in New York. It was done with recommendation from Edward Cardinal Egan the Archbishop of New York. On the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Mother in heaven, August 15, 2007, the Oratory was instituted in the presence of Cardinal Egan and the Archbishop Alojz Tkac, during a solemn liturgy in our church of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. The General Procurator, P. Edoardo Cerrato, consigned the Decree of Foundation to the Oratorian Fathers and delivered the following address: Your Eminence Cardinal Egan, Most Reverend Archbishop Tkac, Reverend Monsignors and Fathers, Esteemed Guests and Friends. It is with joy and honor that I bring to this new Congregation of the Oratory the Apostolic Rescript by which the Holy Father Benedict XVI canonically established this Congregation.
